• Toyota Astra Motor will offer a three-row SUV based on the Hilux Champ in Indonesia.
  • The passenger-friendly version of the truck was created by a local body shop.

The Toyota Hilux Champ – sold as the Hilux Rangga in Indonesia – is known for its customization potential, so it’s no surprise that there is a new bodystyle variant in town. The budget-oriented truck has been transformed into a passenger-friendly SUV, featuring an enclosed cabin with a three-row, seven-seat layout.

The conversion is undertaken by an Indonesian company called New Armada, which manufactures bodyworks for buses. However, the Hilux Rangga SUV will be officially sold by Toyota Astra Motor in the Indonesian market as a complete vehicle. The first prototype was shown in October, but the company has now shared photos of the production version on social media, confirming its availability for early 2025.

The front portion of the vehicle is carried over from the pickup, but everything from the B-pillar backwards has been redesigned. The new tail mirrors the boxy styling and surfacing of the truck, in an effort to look OEM. The same applies to rear doors and the complex side windows, which look like the result of AI rendering software.

At the back, there is a big tailgate with Rangga lettering, and a set of vertically-mounted taillights with a very basic design. The team added a taller roof section with roof rails, and retained a heavy dose of unpainted plastic cladding on the lower portion of the bodywork. Finally, the black alloy wheels with six spokes try to make the LCV-based model look more civilized.

Inside, the Rangga SUV has two extra rows of seat at the back, with a 2+3+2 layout. In the prototype, the seats are upholstered in a leather-style material, and appear to have a reclining function. From the videos, it looks like the boot space behind the third row is limited, despite the generous footprint.

The Toyota Hilux Rangga rides on a cheaper version of the IMV ladder-frame chassis, similar to the regular Hilux and the Fortuner SUV. In Indonesia, the model is available with either a 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 137 hp (102 kW / 139 PS), or a more potent 2.4-liter turbodiesel generating 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS). Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

Anton Jimmy Suwandi, Marketing Director at Toyota Astra Motor, spoke to local media Antara Otomotif about the pricing of the Hilux Rangga SUV. The gasoline version with a manual gearbox will reportedly start from a under Rp400,000,000 ($25,000). For comparison, the cheapest Toyota Rangga pickup costs Rp188,700,000 ($11,800), while the Fortuner SUV starts at Rp573,700,000 ($35,800). At the moment it remains unclear if Toyota will offer the Rangga SUV in other markets.
