• Ford has introduced the new Expedition SSV, aimed at police departments and government agencies.
  • The model is based on the redesigned SUV and features a Split Gate as well as a 24-inch display.
  • Power is provided by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that produces 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque.

Ford introduced the 2025 Expedition in October and they’re now following up with a new variant. However, it’s one you’ll never want to ride in or see in your rearview mirror.

It’s the Expedition SSV, which is a police-spec model that sports 18-inch wheels as well as a rear Split Gate. The latter three-quarters lifts up, while the lower quarter folds down to provide a platform capable of supporting up to 500 lbs (227 kg) of gear.

Ford didn’t go into many other specifics, but we can see a push bumper from Setina Manufacturing. It’s joined by a slender light bar and side steps.

The interior echoes the retail variant and features a 24-inch panoramic display. It’s joined by a separate touchscreen, which presumably measures 13.2 inches.

Elsewhere, we can see a police-spec center console with unique switchgear. Ford also noted the Expedition SSV has a Dark Car function, which shuts off all interior lights to help occupants remain hidden during stakeouts.

The standard model has a two-row configuration with cloth seats and vinyl floors, while the Expedition Max SSV offers three rows of seating. This, combined with the extra 11.8 inches (300 mm) of length, makes it better for hauling people and gear.

Power is provided by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that produces 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) and 480 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a ten-speed automatic transmission and a standard four-wheel drive system. This setup enables the model to tow up to 9,600 lbs (4,354 kg), which should make it appealing to forces with maritime divisions.

Speaking of towing, there’s Pro-Trailer Hitch Assist, Pro-Trailer Backup Assist, and a Blind Spot Information System with Trailer Coverage. Other driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Evasive Steering Assist, Post-Collision Braking, and Reverse Brake Assist.

Besides introducing the 2025 Expedition SSV, Ford is celebrating the 75th anniversary of their original police package. It debuted on the Custom and would go onto spawn a dizzying array of police vehicles.

The iconic Crown Victoria needs no introduction, but the company has offered the Bronco Special Purpose, Mustang Patrol, Police Interceptor Sedan, and Police Interceptor Utility. Other models include the F-150 Police Responder and F-150 Lightning Pro SSV.
